Demand Response
Programs that pay businesses to reduce electricity use during peak grid demand.
What it means
Demand response programs pay or credit electricity users for reducing consumption when the grid is under stress, typically a handful of hours on the hottest or coldest days of the year. Grid operators use it as an alternative to bringing expensive peaking generation online.
Participation is arranged in advance: a facility commits to reducing a certain amount of load when called, receives notice of an event, and reduces consumption for its duration.
What makes a facility a good fit
- Load that can be shifted, paused or run later without harming operations
- On-site generation or backup power that can carry part of the load
- Equipment that can be cycled, such as HVAC, pumps or refrigeration with thermal slack
- Staff or controls able to respond when an event is called
