Utility Bill Auditing
Review of utility bills to find billing errors and overcharges.
What it means
A utility bill audit compares what you were invoiced against what you should have been invoiced. That means checking the bill line by line against the supply contract, the utility’s published tariff, and the meter data behind the usage.
Errors are not rare, and they rarely correct themselves. A meter multiplier entered wrong, a rate class that no longer matches how the building is used, or sales tax applied to exempt usage can continue for years before anyone notices.
What an audit looks at
- The contracted rate versus the rate actually billed
- Rate class and tariff, whether the account is on the right one
- Meter readings, multipliers and estimated reads
- Demand charges and how peak demand was set
- Pass-through and delivery charges
- Sales tax, including usage that may be exempt
- Late fees and charges from previous billing periods
