What it means

Electricity from every source is mixed together on the grid, so no business can trace the specific electrons reaching its meter. Renewable Energy Certificates exist to solve that accounting problem.

A REC represents the environmental attributes of one megawatt-hour of electricity generated from a renewable source such as wind or solar. When a business buys and retires RECs matching its consumption, it can claim that consumption as renewable. RECs can be bought bundled with a supply contract or separately.

Common reasons businesses buy them

• A corporate or parent-company sustainability commitment
• Customer, tenant or partner requirements
• Reporting obligations that call for renewable electricity figures
• Matching part or all of annual consumption rather than the whole load
